[He was quite interested in seeing what the Hogfather left for him. He finds this note and opens it. And then goes upstairs to a new world.
And he had been human, with proper human emotions. And then his entire family was killed and he suddenly felt the immense loss of death properly. Grief, and sadness and this time there was nothing to stop any of the emotions from overcoming him.
A long while after that, he's back to normal. But the memories are still strong and he'll pick up the phone in slightly shaky hands.]
